NEW JERSEY VEHICLE TITLE AND SELLING GUIDE

DOCUMENTS GENERALLY NEEDED TO SELL A VEHICLE IN NEW JERSEY
When selling a vehicle in New Jersey, sellers are generally expected to provide the following. Requirements may vary based on the vehicle type, ownership status, and individual circumstances. Always verify current requirements with the NJMVC.
Certificate of Title (Pink Slip)
The original New Jersey Certificate of Ownership (title) signed over to the buyer. The seller must sign the title in the designated seller section. The odometer reading must be recorded on the title at the time of transfer for most vehicles.
Valid Photo Identification
A government-issued photo ID for the seller is typically required to verify identity during the transaction.
Odometer Disclosure
Federal law requires an odometer disclosure for most vehicles under a certain age. This is typically completed on the title itself. Verify current federal and state requirements.
Bill of Sale (Recommended)
While not always required by the state, a written bill of sale documenting the sale price, date, vehicle identification number (VIN), and the names of both buyer and seller is strongly recommended for both parties' protection.
Lien Release (If Applicable)
If the vehicle has an outstanding loan, a lien release from the lender is required before a clear title can be transferred. See the Liens section below.
HOW TO APPLY FOR A DUPLICATE TITLE
If your original title has been lost, stolen, or damaged, you can apply for a duplicate title through the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission before completing a sale.
General process (verify current requirements at nj.gov/mvc):
- 1Obtain Form OS/SS-52 (Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Ownership) from the NJMVC website or an NJMVC agency.
- 2Complete the form with the vehicle information, your name and address, and the reason for the duplicate request.
- 3Submit the completed form along with the required fee. Submission may be accepted in person at an NJMVC agency or by mail.
- 4Once processed, the NJMVC will issue a duplicate title in the owner's name.
- 5If there is an active lien on the vehicle, the lienholder may need to be involved in the duplicate title process.

LIENS AND LIEN RELEASES
A lien is a legal claim on a vehicle, typically held by a lender when the vehicle was purchased with financing. In New Jersey, a vehicle with an active lien generally cannot be transferred with a clear title until the lien is satisfied and released.
What is a lien release?
A lien release is a document from the lienholder (usually a bank, credit union, or finance company) confirming that the loan has been paid in full and the lien has been removed from the title.
How do I get a lien release?
Contact your lender directly. Once the loan is paid off, the lender is required to provide a lien release. The lender may send the release directly to the NJMVC or provide it to you to submit.
What if I still owe money on the vehicle?
If you owe more than the vehicle's value, you will need to pay the difference to the lender to obtain a lien release. Some buyers may work with lenders directly — consult the NJMVC and your lender for options.
Electronic liens
New Jersey participates in electronic lien and title (ELT) programs. If your lien is electronic, the lender holds the title electronically and will need to release it through the NJMVC system. Contact your lender for the process.
LICENSE PLATES AFTER A SALE
In New Jersey, license plates are generally assigned to the owner, not the vehicle. This means plates do not automatically transfer to the buyer when a vehicle is sold.
Remove your plates before the vehicle leaves
When selling a vehicle, remove your license plates before the buyer takes possession. Leaving your plates on a sold vehicle can create liability issues if the vehicle is used after the sale.
Transfer plates to another vehicle
New Jersey generally allows you to transfer your existing plates to another vehicle you own. Contact the NJMVC for the current transfer process and any applicable fees.
Surrender plates you no longer need
If you are not transferring your plates to another vehicle, you may surrender them to the NJMVC. Surrendering plates may affect your insurance obligations — consult your insurer.
NOTICE OF SALE AND SELLER RESPONSIBILITIES
After selling a vehicle, New Jersey sellers are generally advised to notify the NJMVC that the vehicle has been sold. This helps protect the seller from liability for the vehicle's use after the sale — including traffic violations, tolls, or accidents that occur after ownership has transferred.
General seller responsibilities at the time of sale:
- Sign the title over to the buyer completely and accurately, including the odometer reading where required.
- Remove your license plates from the vehicle.
- Provide the buyer with a bill of sale documenting the transaction.
- Notify the NJMVC of the sale using the Notice of Sale process available at nj.gov/mvc.
- Contact your insurance provider to update or cancel coverage on the sold vehicle.

SPECIAL SITUATIONS
Certain vehicle types and ownership situations involve additional steps or documentation beyond a standard passenger vehicle sale. The following is a general overview. Always verify specific requirements with the NJMVC.
Inherited Vehicles
Transferring a vehicle from a deceased owner's estate may require documentation such as a death certificate, letters testamentary, an affidavit of surviving spouse, or other probate-related documents depending on how the estate is handled. Requirements vary. Consult the NJMVC and, if needed, an estate attorney.
RVs and Motorhomes
Recreational vehicles and motorhomes are titled as motor vehicles in New Jersey. The title transfer process is generally similar to passenger vehicles, but the vehicle type and weight class may affect registration and transfer requirements. Verify with the NJMVC.
Campers and Trailers
Towable campers and trailers may be titled separately from the tow vehicle. New Jersey titles trailers above a certain weight. Verify whether your specific camper or trailer requires a separate title and what documentation is needed for transfer.
Box Trucks and Commercial Vehicles

Vehicles with Salvage or Rebuilt Titles
Vehicles that have been declared a total loss by an insurance company may receive a salvage title. Rebuilt or reconstructed vehicles that have been repaired and inspected may receive a rebuilt title. Each title type has specific transfer requirements — verify with the NJMVC.
